Attaching the small wooden pieces

Attaching the small wooden pieces
It was a cold start again this morning, but during the day it felt a little warmer indoors thanks to the sunlight. It looks like the weather will be warmer in the latter half of this week, although it seems it may turn cold again next week...😂

As I wrote yesterday, today I worked on preparing and attaching the sliding key panels for the 3-sun 12-step puzzle boxes. The panels themselves were already finished, so today I mainly worked on processing the boxes and then glued one side panel in place. The process is as follows: first, I attach small wooden pieces called "bocchi" to the box. After that, I cut the side panels that stick out slightly. Then, I shave the surface where the wooden pieces were attached to make it flat and ready for gluing.

This time, I had a bit of trouble attaching the bocchi. For the 3-sun boxes, I use a different way of attaching these small wooden pieces compared to the 4-sun and other boxes. The wood used for the pieces was just a little harder than usual, so it didn’t go on smoothly. I could attach them, but it was taking a lot of time. I thought about remaking the pieces, but instead I decided to use a different method that I use for other boxes, not the usual 3-sun method. With this method, I was able to attach them without problems. In simple terms, it’s the direction of attachment. Normally, for the 3-sun boxes, I attach the pieces from the top in relation to the Aruki panel. This time, I inserted them from the side. It’s hard to understand the difference without actually trying it, but I feel that inserting them from the side makes the movement of the piece smoother later on. In the past, I used the top-insertion method for all boxes, but about ten years ago I changed to inserting them from the side. For 3-sun boxes, because the number of boxes is large and the pieces are very small, inserting them from the side is a bit difficult, so I kept using the old method. This time, however, I used the newer method. Well… even after the box is finished, the difference is hard to notice anyway… 😅 That’s how delicate and subtle the attachment of these small wooden pieces really is.

For the 3-sun boxes, attaching the panels goes relatively quickly because the sliding key panels are small. I group four boxes together and hold them with rubber bands, then leave them overnight. Tomorrow, I plan to attach the panels on the other side.
