Natural wood top panels
Today I arrived at the workshop a bit later than usual, and since I have plans in the evening, my working time was shorter. It seems many companies in Japan are still on their Obon holidays today. The highways are very crowded with cars heading to tourist spots. I guess work will start again from around tomorrow… but then it’s the weekend again! 😄
Even so, I worked on making and attaching the top and bottom panels for the 4-sun boxes, and making parts for the 2-sun cube boxes.
I think I may be making more 2-sun or 2-sun cube boxes in the future, so I decided to prepare extra parts in advance. The 2-sun boxes and the 2-sun cube boxes share the same parts. Since the box width is shorter, the parts are made narrower than the 3-sun box parts, even though the height is the same. If I have time tomorrow, I plan to make the Aruki panels (moving panels) after attaching these parts.
For this 4-sun box, I’m using rosewood panels for the top and bottom. These are not solid boards, but sliced natural rosewood attached to MDF boards.
I made about 22 boxes this time. Most have walnut side panels, and the rest have agathis wood sides. I’m also using a new building method, so the top and bottom panels are fitted in rather than simply glued. This is a delicate job, because each panel must be adjusted precisely to fit each box before assembly. After that, I press them lightly with a vise while gluing, and leave them in place until the next day.
I also postponed attaching the side Aruki panels for the 2-sun box today. Partly because I had limited time, but also because it rained heavily again last night. Even though it’s sunny today, the humidity is still high, so I decided to wait until tomorrow or later.
Tomorrow I plan to come to the workshop at my usual time, as I also have shipping work to do.
