Tools used to apply glue
It started raining this morning, and even at the highest, the temperature is only 7 degrees, so it is a very cold day. I had some errands in the morning, so I came to the workshop around noon. Because of the rain, there are only limited things I can do, but I continued gluing the panels for the 6-sun puzzle boxes from yesterday and worked on making the sliding key panels for the 5-sun puzzle boxes. I decided to leave the gluing work for the 5-sun puzzle boxes for another day.
When I arrived at the workshop, a roller I bought the other day had arrived. You might think, “What is this for?” but as you probably know, it is a painting tool. You may have seen painters using this kind of roller on a handle to paint house walls. We use this roller as a tool to spread glue. There are many ways to apply glue to boxes and yosegi work, but when we need to spread glue evenly over a large panel, this roller is very useful. Some of you may have seen it before at live demonstrations or sales events. It allows us to apply glue quite evenly, so it is an essential tool for attaching yosegi sheets. Many makers produce this type of roller, but if you buy a very cheap one, the fibers of the roller can mix with the glue and stick to the panel. Because of that, it may be better to wash it once with water before use, or to use one that has already been used a few times (not for painting, of course). After using it, you need to keep it soaked in water. If glue is left inside and dries, the roller cannot be used again. If possible, washing it with warm water is better. The glue is water-soluble, so warm water removes it more easily. Well, I don’t think many people make so many puzzle boxes that they need to worry about this too much…😅
