This month’s limited-edition boxes
It’s been raining since morning, though it has now lightened to a drizzle, and the weather seems to be improving. This morning, I worked on finishing the 4-sun 27-steps boxes. The humidity is a bit high, so I didn’t want to leave the boxes exposed to the air for too long. I finished the work quickly and returned them to the humidity-controlled case.
This project had been on hold for a while, but it looks like it will be completed without any issues. Autumn tends to bring many rainy days, mainly because of typhoons and the so-called “long autumn rains.” The forecast says it will be sunny tomorrow, but since a sudden change in weather can be tricky (A sudden change in humidity is not good for the boxes). I’ll see how it goes before moving on to the next painting process.
In addition to that, today I made and attached the top and bottom panels for the square 18-steps boxes. I worked on them quickly and plan to return them to the case again this evening. Some of the top and bottom panels for these boxes use the random-grain design that I started making last month. Since that work was finished sooner than I expected, I decided to attach them today.
Due to material availability, I’m making only 12 of the random-grain type this time. Among them, I decided to include the limited-edition boxes for this month. Initially, I was planning to make the limited edition with the random-grain design, but instead, I decided to use the solid wood type as the limited version. I’ve used these solid panels before, but not with the checkered (ichimatsu) side panels used in the 18-steps design. This time, I’m making 8 boxes as the limited edition (202510).
Actually, I was thinking about making this square box with a 27-steps mechanism, but since the box is shorter in length, the internal space would have become even smaller. So, I decided to make it an 18-steps box instead. The height is the same as the 4-sun size, so technically it’s possible to make a 27-steps version. However, since the aruki moving panels for the 27-steps type are thicker than those for the 18-steps type, the internal front-to-back space becomes shorter — about 38 mm.
That means the inner storage space would be around 38 mm (length) × 64 mm (width) for the 27-steps version. Well, I guess not many people store anything inside these boxes anyway 😅, but it just felt like a slightly awkward size. Still, I might consider making one in the future
