Thin drawer for 4-sun box

Today the temperature rose, and it turned into a hot day. It’s not as severe as midsummer, but since it had been getting cooler recently, the heat feels harder on the body. The humidity was rather low, which made it a little easier to bear…😅

I continued my work today. For the 4-sun 27-steps puzzle boxes, I spent time making the panels. In the end, I decided to make about nine boxes with the new type of panel. After seeing how they turn out, I will decide whether to make more in the future.
Since these panels take a little more time to produce than usual, I decided to use the new wood combinations only for the top panels, and for the bottom panels I will use the usual walnut. Because they are all natural woods, I don’t think there will be any sense of imbalance between the top and bottom designs.
I plan to make a few different variations to see which choice works best. Along with these, I am also making the usual zebrawood and rosewood types. Since these designs are mainly made with natural woods, I originally thought the side panels should also be natural wood. But this time, I chose to use the checkerboard Yosegi (ichimatsu) type instead.

Today I started making the 4-sun 10-steps drawer puzzle boxes. I prepared the materials and did the preliminary work for the side panels. Since these are drawer type boxes, I also had to prepare the materials for the drawer parts.
While preparing the materials this time, I was reminded again that fitting a drawer into a 4-sun box is really a tight squeeze 😅 I also have to secure enough space for the upper box section, so the drawer itself ends up being only 15 mm in height. That’s what I used last time as well. Even so, this time I plan to make the overall height of the boxes about 1 mm taller.

I also make the drawer parts as thin as possible. The drawer lid is about 4 mm, and the bottom plate is 2 mm. With small drawer puzzle boxes like these, there is the option of leaving out the lid since the drawer is so small (and thin). But I feel that wouldn’t be interesting. It’s important to make them in the same way as a standard 10-steps drawer puzzle box. So, since I made the box itself 1 mm taller this time, I may also make the drawer 1 mm taller.

According to my records, I made these boxes in September 2023. I can’t believe two years have already passed… This time, I’m not making the traditional Yosegi type, but I hope to create something interesting.
Wishing you a good weekend!
