27-steps boxes
The three-day holiday ended yesterday, and from today it is the start of the work week for most people. The forecast says today and tomorrow will be sunny, but from this weekend the weather will start to turn a bit worse. It feels like the real autumn season is arriving, and in Japan autumn is known for having many rainy days. People often call it “aki no nagame,” meaning the long rains of autumn. It seems we are just about to enter that kind of weather. In Japan, June is known as the rainy season, but actually in our area (the Kanto region, the area centered around Tokyo), it is said that the amount of rain in autumn is even greater than in June.
I also came to my workshop as usual today. I worked on making and attaching the Kannuki panels (sliding lock panels used in the mechanism) for the 4-sun 27-steps puzzle boxes, and I also began work on the next project, the 4-sun 18-steps boxes.
As I wrote yesterday, for the 4-sun 27-steps puzzle boxes I used two types of solid wood veneer sheets for the top and bottom panels, but for the 18-steps boxes I decided to use two types: traditional Yosegi (custom order) and Walnut veneer sheets. Today I attached the veneer sheets for the 18-steps boxes, including the side panels. From tomorrow I plan to start making the structural parts.
Recently, I have been doing the same kind of work three times in a row, first with 27-steps boxes and then 18-steps boxes. At first, I thought about making a different type of box next, but with this flow I decided to make another 27-steps box. I haven’t prepared yet, but I plan to do it in order to increase the stock of 4-sun 27-steps boxes a little more.
For the side panels, I will either use the same Ichimatsu Yosegi as this time or the two-color Ichimatsu Yosegi that I made before. For the top and bottom panels, instead of traditional Yosegi, I am thinking of using natural wood or another design. One reason is that I recently made many spare parts for the 27-steps boxes, so I can use them now.
After all, the 27-steps boxes are in demand, and I had received requests, but for the past few months I had no 27-steps boxes at all. So, until the Christmas season is over, I want to do my best to keep this box always in stock.
