New creative yosegi

This morning the sky was cloudy, and just before noon the long-awaited rain finally began to fall. In some other regions there has been heavy rain and serious damage, but in our area it has been a welcome rain after a long time. Thanks to that, today has become much cooler, though as usual the humidity is high and it feels damp.

Because I expected this kind of weather, I finished attaching the Kannuki panels (slide key panels) fo 4-sun boxes early in the morning. After that, I mainly worked on 4.2-sun boxes. I shaved the materials, brought them to the right thickness, and then cut them to size. I haven’t yet finished making the frame parts today, but I did complete the axis panels.
This time, half of the order is for solid wood top and bottom panels, so I also prepared for that. It is a design that combines four different kinds of wood. I need to make them early and let them dry a little. I have about four extra boxes, so I may use them for other solid wood designs, or for my usual type where a solid wood sheet (zebra or rose wood) is pasted onto MDF.
Later today, I plan to do the finishing work on a nearly completed 5-sun box.

And today, I also thought about the plan for my next creative yosegi work. Since I still have some materials left from July, which I had prepared for creative yosegi, I’m considering making a new design as a continuation of that. For this one, I might make it into a 4-sun box again, or maybe try making it square.
With this kind of creative yosegi, I first imagine a rough design in my head, and then as I work, I add different kinds of wood along the way. I don’t really like deciding everything completely in advance and then just following the plan. Instead, I prefer to create in a more spontaneous way, which I feel leads to good results.
I’m hoping to use this yosegi as one of my limited edition works for the second half of this year. I actually wanted to add some black wood (Katsura Jindai), but if I use it in large areas, the wood tends to break apart, so I will probably not use it this time. Instead, I’m thinking of using more Mizuki (the white wood).
