Preparation for 4-sun box

Just as it was starting to feel a little like autumn, the weather forecast says that high temperatures will return from tomorrow. Still, last night was much cooler than usual, and this morning was also refreshing. With the lower humidity, I can really feel that the season is gradually changing.

Today, I continued working on 5-sun 27-steps boxes and also prepared materials for other boxes. Since I had run out of stock parts for the 27-steps mechanism, I made some new ones. Come to think of it, I haven’t been making many 27-steps boxes recently—I’ve been working more on smaller ones.

This time, I also have a request for 4-sun boxes, so I plan to make a few. Of course, they won’t be in traditional yosegi 😂 Instead, I will produce a type with rosewood on the top and bottom, and another in walnut. The walnut version will be made to order, with 12-steps and 14-steps mechanisms. Today I attached sliced panels of these two woods for the large boards of top and bottom.
For some boxes, I plan to include the same kind of decorative edging along the upper side panels as I did last time, which was well received. This time, I will make that edging in magnolia (ho) wood.

Yesterday, before going home, I stopped by a supermarket near my workshop that is closing down. The shelves were already quite empty because of the closing, but since I used to go there often, it felt both nostalgic and sad.
In Japan, many of the traditional supermarkets (the kind that mainly sell fresh food) are struggling, except for the big discount chains. One of the main reasons is that drugstores have started to become like supermarkets. These are not small pharmacies, but large stores with wide aisles, and they sell not only medicine but also all kinds of daily necessities—and, of course, food. Some of the bigger ones even sell fish, meat, and vegetables. In other words, they are full-scale supermarkets, and their prices are cheaper.

Year by year, this “supermarket-style drugstore” trend has been growing, and the old-style supermarkets have been losing customers. Their strength is still fresh food, but they are weak in daily goods, so people shift to the drugstores. In the case of the supermarket that just closed, there are now four different drugstore chains on the same street, and it seems most customers moved there.
Times change, and consumer needs naturally change too, but still, it feels lonely to see a supermarket I had shopped at for so long disappear.
Enjoy your weekend!😊
