Materials for 5-sun
It’s still another hot day here. It’s quite difficult to do heavy work in the afternoon, so I try to do those tasks in the morning and then continue with assembly and lighter processes in the afternoon. Even so, I feel just a little hint of autumn coming. The red dragonflies have started to appear. In Japan, red dragonflies are a symbol of autumn, replacing the cicadas of summer. It’s only a small sign, but it feels like the season is slowly moving forward.
Today, I mainly worked on making and attaching the Aruki panels (moving panels) for the 14-steps mame puzzle boxes, as well as producing and attaching the top and bottom panels. This time, the side panels come in two versions, but the top and bottom panels are made with traditional yosegi, so that part is unified. For the version with solid wood (Ho / Magnolia) side panels, I paid a little attention to placing brighter yosegi patterns on the top and bottom.
When all six sides are made with traditional yosegi, even if one panel has only two colors, the whole box still looks very colorful. But for the type with solid wood sides, since only the top and bottom panels are decorated, I try to prioritize using lighter and brighter colors. The patterns of the mame puzzle box are completely random, so I always think carefully about arranging the yosegi so that the overall balance of the design feels just right.
With the last shipment I sent out today, my site has completely run out of stock of the 5-sun size traditional yosegi type puzzle boxes (sorry about that). Because of this, I’ve decided to make a small additional batch. This time, I plan to produce the 5-sun 27-steps puzzle box. The number will be limited, but since these are only sold through my site, I think the stock will last for a while. Today, I first prepared the boards for applying the yosegi marquetry sheet.
Unfortunately, I won’t be able to provide any for wholesale orders for the time being (5-sun size Traditional yosegi type boxes). The traditional yosegi used for these boxes is made specially for them, and the process is very time-consuming. The yosegi craftsmen cannot keep up with production, and now they are only able to supply it once a year at most. With the number of craftsmen decreasing, mass production of this type of box has become very difficult 🤔
