4-sun 14-steps

Since yesterday, the weather has improved, and today was another very hot day. The materials have dried quite a bit, so I resumed working on the 4-sun 14-steps puzzle boxes. Today, I attached the outer side panels.
This time, there are three types of designs for the top panel, but most of the side panels are made with walnut wood. A few will use the usual checkered yosegi sheet panels. Once these panels are attached, they don’t easily move or shrink due to changes in the environment. Still, it’s best to do this kind of work on clear, dry days like today.

When attaching the panel to the structural part of the box, about 90% of the panel is in contact with the structure and is glued down. However, glue is not applied evenly across the entire surface—only in a few specific spots. Even with this method, there’s little risk of the panel coming off. But where the glue is placed is very important.

The reason we don’t apply glue all over is because the moisture in the glue can cause the panel to warp outward. Humidity and dryness play a big role in this process. During the work, it’s important to act quickly and carefully time when to clamp the panel with a vise. If you miss the right timing, the panel won’t adhere properly.

It looks like we’ll have more hot days this week, so I hope to make good progress on this box 😄
