Heat bonding

*My production schedule is getting busier, so for a while, I plan to keep my blog posts a bit shorter.

The weather was nice today, and it was even a bit warm. These conditions are actually quite good for making the structural parts of the boxes.
Today, I officially started the full production of the 3-sun 12-step puzzle boxes. I assembled the frame parts and also worked on making the Aruki panels (moving panels). There are many pieces to make, but everything is going smoothly so far.

The photo shows the original state of the Yosegi panels that will be used for the top and bottom surfaces of the boxes. I will cut these into smaller pieces to fit the 3-sun size.

These Yosegi sheets are glued onto MDF boards using woodworking glue. However, if the glue isn't fully set, the sheets may peel off later. So, to be extra careful, I also use an iron to apply heat bonding. The heat softens the dried glue, allowing it to stick more firmly.

This iron is just a regular household iron, but a dry iron is best for this kind of work. These days, most irons are steam irons (which release steam while ironing), so it’s getting harder to find dry irons like this.

I plan to continue these tasks tomorrow as well.
