Side panels of 18-step box
Well, I had a few errands to run today, so my working time was shorter than usual, but I still managed to make some progress. First, I attached the side panels of the 4-sun 18-step puzzle boxes. This step doesn’t usually take much time, but since I’m making a large number of boxes this time, it required a bit more time.
That said, all the boxes in this batch will have panels with the checkered Yosegi(ichimatsu)-sheet design, which makes the process smoother. Normally, even if the mechanism is the same, I often create two different designs of boxes in the same batch, so my workflow tends to change around this stage.
For this project, I prepared a large number of checkered panels and attached them to the boxes. After attaching the panels, they need to be pressed and left until tomorrow, so today’s work on the 18-step puzzle boxes ends here.
Well, well, it’s not that I forgot about it...haha😅, but I’ve been continuing work on the 2-sun cube puzzle boxes I started last week. I had put the project on hold for a while due to time constraints. After attaching the side panels, I left them clamped with woodworking vices for quite some time—probably more than enough by now 🤣 Today, I removed the clamps and began preparing to attach the final panel, the “Kannuki(slide keys) panel.” First, I worked on making and attaching the “Bocchi(small wood parts of Kannuki).” The Bocchi for this box is extremely small, measuring about 6mm x 13mm. You could say it’s a shorter version of the Bocchi used for 3-sun boxes. The thickness of the Aruki is the same as that of a 3-sun box, 6mm.
Because the box is so small, the space available for attaching and supporting the “Kannuki” is also very limited. This makes the process very delicate and requires precise work.
This week, I had less time for work. I had a lot of errands to run and was often out of the workshop. I’ll continue these tasks next week, but it’s already the last week of January... time flies. Many stores have already started their Valentine’s Day gift sales. It seems like everyone is already preparing for February. Have a great weekend!
