2-sun / 2-sun cube boxes
Today starts a new week, and the Obon holidays have ended, so it seems that many people are back to work. At the same time, the severe heat has also returned. The forecast says the temperature will stay around 35°C this week.
In Japan, even when it is hot, the humidity does not drop very much. At the hottest time of the day, the humidity is around 50–60%, but during other hours it stays around 60–70%. This means the air feels not only hot but also very damp, which makes the body very tired. Even if you stay in the shade, sweat still comes out. Many visitors from overseas say that this is the hardest part of summer in Japan.
Today, I first worked on finishing the 2-sun puzzle boxes, which took a little extra time. They are small boxes, but this time I am making about 50 of them. The finishing went well, and now they will move on to the undercoating process.
I also worked on the final assembly of the 2-sun cube puzzle box, attaching the “Kannuki panels” (slide keys) to the Aruki (moving panels) part. Since this is a 12-step box, there are panels on both the left and right sides. For that reason, I attach them over two days, one side per day.
The solid wood design of this box is a limited edition and will not be repeated. It is basically the familiar striped type, but compared to the boxes I make regularly, I used a wider variety of woods for the top and bottom panels.
Today, I also started the next project: 3-sun, 12-step puzzle boxes. I prepared and processed the boards for the side panels, beginning from this part since I am trying a new way of making it.
This time, in addition to the solid wood design ordered by an overseas shop, I will also create a unique type to keep in my own stock. I have a few ideas, but I haven’t decided which one yet. It may turn out to be a bit of an experimental box 😁
