Cube 12-step box
Today, the rainy weather continues, and the humidity is still high, so I can’t do detailed work.
Instead, I started preparing for my next project. This time, I’m planning to make 2-sun cube puzzle boxes, and I want to try making a 12-steps mechanism for the first time in a long while. It’s been a long time since I last made the 2-sun cube with 12 steps.
This work will be part of this month’s limited-edition boxes. For now, I’m planning to make about 36 boxes in total, and around 20 of them will be the limited edition. I have already prepared the solid wood panels for the top and bottom, and these will be used for the limited version. The other boxes will have traditional yosegi on the top and bottom. The side panels will be made from Agathis wood.
Lately, I’ve been working on many 2-sun cube boxes. For the past few years, I only made a 4-steps drawer-type 2-sun cube, but recently I’ve made 4-steps and 7-steps versions as well.
Today, I prepared the materials and made the frame parts. The size is a 2-sun cube, but the thickness of the Aruki panels (moving panels) is the same as the 3-sun 12-steps box—4.5 mm for the top panel and 5 mm for the side panels. The parts for the 2-sun box and the 2-sun cube box are the same, so I will probably need to make more soon because I’ve been using them often lately. The weather should start to improve from tomorrow, but if the humidity is still high, I plan to do the assembly work then.
Right now, Japan is in the middle of the Obon holidays. Many companies are closed, so the roads are less crowded.
However, highways going to tourist spots are jammed with traffic. Even regular department stores and supermarkets are busier than usual during the day.
That’s why I plan to go to a shopping mall tonight. It’s a very large store that stays open late, with many kinds of products and a supermarket inside. In Japan, supermarkets usually discount food every evening. Normally, it’s about 30% off, but late at night, many items go to half price. Lots of customers come for that, and sometimes I end up buying things I don’t really need 😂
But today, because many people are on holiday, the stores will be busier, so I think they won’t offer half-price discounts 🤣
Alright, I’m heading out now 👍
