Change in the panels

The rain that had continued until yesterday has finally stopped, and today the sun came out from the morning. The humidity is still a bit high, but after waiting a little while, I started working on the Aruki panels (moving panels) for the 27-steps puzzle box, for which I had made the frame part yesterday. This box is a special order, so the dimensions are slightly different from usual. I made the Aruki panel to match the frame panel I created yesterday.

From the making of square box I worked on Monday, I changed the shape—and the way I make—the Aruki panel a bit this time. It’s difficult to explain all the details clearly, so I won’t go too deep into it, but I slightly changed the way I measure the part that connects with the groove of the Aruki.

For the Aruki panel to move straight and smoothly along the frame panel, it needs to fit perfectly with the frame. This “perfect fit” is quite difficult, because wood changes depending on humidity and temperature. Until now, I adjusted this fit in one spot where the Aruki panel and the frame touch, but this time, I decided to have two points of contact instead. I believe this will help the Aruki panel slide more smoothly and stay stable.

However, because of this change, there’s also a risk that the movement could become too tight and cause problems. So I would say it’s still in the experimental stage. The rainy season hasn't started yet in my area, and it looks like the weather will be clear for the next few days, so I’m planning to do the Aruki panel fitting work during this period.
