Finishing work

This morning was cloudy, and due to last night’s rain, the humidity was slightly higher than usual. These were good conditions, so I spent the morning working on the finishing process for the 3-sun 12-steps puzzle boxes.

This batch features traditional yosegi panels on the top and bottom, with walnut wood side panels. So, the finishing work was focused mainly on the walnut sides.

The process starts by trimming the excess walnut from the Kannuki panels (slide key panels) so they align perfectly with the top and bottom panels. Next, all four walnut sides are polished using a sanding machine to make the surfaces smooth and clean. After that, I cut the corners of the box diagonally.

Although the walnut panels are already nicely finished when they are in board form, small scratches or bits of dust can appear during production. Polishing just before the final coating removes these completely and ensures a clean surface.

Once the walnut finishing is done, I lightly sand the yosegi panels on the top and bottom to remove any dust. It’s very important that the surface is completely clean before applying the finish, because even a small amount of dust can stick to the box during the coating process, and it’s difficult to remove afterward.
In the afternoon, I did the base coating work and was able to finish it without any problems.
